The last time we ushered in the Year of the Dragon was in 2000, just after the new millennium began. On that occasion we were just packing up our life in Hong Kong, to move to Edinburgh. In the intervening cycle much has changed, and personally by and large for the better.
Yesterday morning's quiet was broken by the premature rat-a-tat-tat of firecrackers, ahead of the first day of the new year today. The above is a photograph of the first snuff bottle I bought, probably nearly 40 years ago. I hope the dragon will bring good fortune to all of us.
And may your laisee packets be overflowing with crisp new banknotes.

I wish you andyours the very best in these troubling, and interesting times. Reggie
Happy Chinese New Year! Here in Taipei it has been eerily quiet, with only a few firecrackers, instead of the usual constant barrage. I know the government has been discouraging them, but it is odd to see this take effect all at once.

RD - thank you, and likewise. Prosperity is a useful thing, but health and happiness more important and often more difficult to achieve. I wish you them all!
Parnassus - not so here on the noise front, in fact I practically jumped out of my bed with a particularly loud set of fireworks/firecrackers at around 12.30 this morning. The rest of the city is however quiet, so obviously some people are taking a holiday, although it is not officially designated.
Hello:
Happy Year of the Dragon!! May it bring joy, health and prosperity!!
The dragon snuff bottle is so very attractive. We love the paprika red dragon!!
Hattatts - thank you, and to you too. It's strange how this little snuff bottle was probably my first foray into a lifetime of collecting, so it is hugely significant for me. And these colours are ones I have used and re-used throughout many years of decorative schemes.
Best wishes to you & yours dahhling in this "new" dragon year!
Happy belated Chinese New Year. I was very pleased to see this snuff bottle as a frind of mine has several of these and I had no idea what they were. Thanks.
