Keeping it real

We spent this afternoon looking at the stunning orchids on display at the 6th show of its kind held at one of Bangkok's largest shopping malls. There were also specimens for sale and we bought a couple of plants which now adorn the entrance to the living area.

In the previous post I was lamenting the possibility of finding artificial flowers in the lift lobby, but it's strange to say that from a distance these look as though they could be.

I am happy to say they are actually out of this world, so to speak.

Whilst the show isn't quite Chelsea, it's an excellent showcase for a species that attracts a huge following world-wide. It helps too that it's held indoors in airconditioning, allowing us to avoid the current phase of afternoon downpours.

I always touch an orchid to see if it is real. We have one in our living room similar (to my eye) to yours but the spots are larger - blotches of a deep wine colour. I realize, of course, that blotches rather than spots might mean a different sort of orchid altogether. This is its second blooming this year.

How clever to get yours to re-flower! We had one that did rather regularly, but it's now in the orchid graveyard. I suspect these new babies will join it and others after their current endeavours. But at least that's a few weeks away.

I love orchids, especially those with a scent. Reblooming usually takes a year, and can be a challenge for apartment dwellers. Try to incorporate the older plant foliage with new ones if the lack of flower is too sad. And don't overwater but fertilize.

DC - yes, even with large balconies, the breeze up in this rarefied atmosphere tends to be too severe for most flora, but I'm no expert in the tending, and other members of the household have varying degrees of success. The flower market comes to the rescue when replenishments are required.
