Watercolour

This rather pretty photograph series from the Bangkok Post depicts one of the Kingdom's more colourful ceremonies - the Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phrya river, which passes in front of the Grand Palace, with its glittering spires, (above).

They do have public events in Taiwan, but nothing like the orderly procession in those photographs. I know it's the wrong country, but I can just hear Handel's Water Music accompanying it.

Handel's piece is one of my favourites. It could easily accompany anything, anywhere!

So stately and grand! Reminds me a bit of Queen Elizabeth's 1,000 boat Diamond Jubilee flotilla.

Dear Columnist, These are wonderful photographs, and I'd love to view that procession in person. Years ago I read the fascinating biography of King Mongkut, Rama IV, which in turn made me very conscious of the current king, and his good works.

Loi - yes, similar, but dry!

Mark - historical context is always fascinating, and these ceremonies bring that to the forefront.
